Did Rob Lowe Attempt To Be A Musician?

Rob Lowe’s journey through the ’80s wasn’t just marked by his heartthrob status—he also dabbled in the music scene, revealing that he once tried to venture into yacht rock by recording a demo with the famous band Toto. On his podcast Literally, Lowe opened up about this musical experiment, recalling a chaotic period in his life when he was dealing with the pressures of being an actor in his prime but struggling to land the roles that would define his future.

He described this time as one where he was “doing too much Bolivian marching powder” (a reference to his wild lifestyle at the time) and feeling lost in his career. Lowe felt like he was at a crossroads in his acting career—too old for his previous roles but too young for the more lasting, significant parts. In response, he turned to music, a passion of his, and ended up recording a demo with Toto. According to Lowe, he called upon the legendary band to help bring his musical vision to life, though ultimately the project never took off.

While the venture into music never materialized, Lowe seems to have mostly left this chapter behind, only occasionally revisiting music-related projects throughout his career. When asked by podcast co-host Simmons about his high-profile relationships in Los Angeles during the ’80s, Lowe humorously responded, “Probably nobody, because I also took having fun very seriously.”

This music venture might not have worked out, but it adds an interesting layer to Lowe’s colorful career in Hollywood.
