Here’s everything you need to know about “Amar Singh Chamkila”.
Plot
In Ali’s film, Chamkila—dubbed the “Elvis Presley of Punjab”—rises to fame and struggles with cynicism, idolatry, and notoriety. From a menial mill worker, he ascends to become the popular voice of Punjab and the state’s best-selling music artist. His followers exclaim, “Other artists are great, but you’re our own.”
Renowned for his candid and sensual songs, Chamkila was a highly sought-after singer-songwriter and live performer who was killed in 1988 in Mehsampur, Punjab, along with Amarjot by unidentified shooters. His 27-year-old death has continued to be a source of intense intrigue and conjecture in Punjab. It was claimed—but not proven—that Sikh separatists were responsible for his death.
