Dip into freshness: make classic guacamole in 5 easy steps

Some dishes earn their fame by being flashy, but others like classic guacamole become favourites for their simple, timeless flavour. With just a handful of ingredients and no fancy techniques, this creamy Mexican dip delivers everything you want from comfort food. It’s fresh, smooth, slightly tangy, and pairs beautifully with chips, toast, tacos, and more.

The magic of guacamole lies in its simplicity. There’s no need for extras when ripe avocados, a splash of lime, chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, and fresh coriander come together. This is the traditional version, no experiments, no twists, just the original flavours that have stood the test of time. Every scoop tastes refreshing, balanced, and satisfying.
Perfect as a party dip, a side for Mexican meals, or even as a spread on toast, guacamole is a go-to recipe that feels like it was made to be shared. And the best part? You can make it at home in five quick steps.

Step 1: Choose ripe avocados and scoop the flesh

Start by selecting two or three ripe avocados. They should feel slightly soft when pressed but not mushy. Slice each avocado in half lengthwise, twist to separate, and remove the pit. Use a spoon to scoop the flesh into a mixing bowl. The smoother and greener the inside, the better your guacamole will taste and look. Make sure to use them as fresh as possible to prevent browning.

Step 2: Mash the avocados to your desired texture

Using a fork or a potato masher, gently mash the avocado flesh in the bowl. You can keep it slightly chunky for a rustic feel or make it smoother depending on your preference. Avoid over-mashing, it’s better when there’s still a bit of texture. Once mashed, set it aside as you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 3: Add onions, tomatoes, and chilli

Finely chop one small onion and one small tomato (seeds removed). Also, chop one green chilli for a little heat. Add these to the mashed avocado and mix gently. The onion adds crunch and a bit of bite, while the tomato adds juiciness and colour. The green chilli brings just enough warmth to balance the creaminess. For a milder version, you can reduce the amount of chilli or skip it altogether.

Step 4: Mix in lime juice, coriander, and salt

Squeeze the juice of one medium lime into the mixture. This not only adds tang but also helps slow down browning. Add salt to taste, start with half a teaspoon and adjust if needed. Finish with a generous handful of chopped fresh coriander leaves. Gently fold everything together until the guacamole is well combined but not overmixed. Taste and tweak as needed more lime for tang, more salt for balance, or more coriander for freshness.

Step 5: Serve fresh or store carefully

Transfer the guacamole to a serving bowl. If you’re serving it right away, pair it with tortilla chips, nachos, tacos, or even use it as a topping for burrito bowls and toast. If you’re storing it for later, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to prevent oxidation and refrigerate. It’s best consumed within a few hours for the freshest flavour and colour.

Classic guacamole is a dish that proves the best things in life are often the simplest. With ripe avocados, a few crisp vegetables, lime, and herbs, you can create a dip that’s full of character and absolutely satisfying. It’s quick to prepare, endlessly versatile, and always a crowd-pleaser. Whether you’re enjoying it solo with chips or as part of a bigger meal, one thing’s certain, you’ll keep coming back for another scoop.
