DJB approves decentralised sewage treatment projects to curb Yamuna pollution

In an effort to improve the Yamuna River’s health, the Delhi Jal Board has authorised a budget of over ₹600 crore to establish 11 decentralised sewage treatment plants throughout the city. Additionally, the board has authorised the ₹250 crore construction of a 15 million gallons per day sewage treatment plant in the Zindpur area.

Decentralised STPs will be erected alongside sewers and other locations with inadequate sewage infrastructure, officials said, in place of conventional sewage treatment plants, which demand a lot of room and funding. There are currently 37 STPs under the Delhi Jal Board, most of which are run and managed by private businesses, who are compensated by the government in accordance with their contracts.

Sewage pumping stations and DSTPs will be built in the Kair, Kanganheri, Kakrola, and Dichaon Kalan sections of the Najafgarh drainage zone. “In addition to construction, 15 years of operation and maintenance costs have been included,” according to a government document. The estimated cost of this project is ₹283.67 crore.

Galibpur, Saranpur, and Shikarpur are a few additional locations in the same zone where the DJB has authorised the building of DSTPs at a cost of ₹157.90 crore. The DJB is now unable to handle all of the city’s sewage production. Therefore, a number of sewage treatment facilities are being improved, and new DSTPs are being approved, in order to boost its overall sewage treatment capacity.

“Four DSTPs will be constructed in the Hasanpur, Jaffarpur, Kazipur, and Khera Dabar areas along with a sewage pumping station at the cost of ₹188.20 crore,” the document from the government stated.

In May of this year, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved the installation of 27 decentralised sewage treatment units throughout the city as part of the river’s cleanup operations. These initiatives would serve residents of Outer Delhi neighbourhoods like Najafgarh, Chattarpur, Matiala, Bijwasan, Mundka, and Narela, according to DJB officials.
