Dominik Szoboszlai joins Liverpool in 70-million-euro deal

Dominik Szoboszlai’s transfer to Liverpool from RB Leipzig was officially announced on Sunday after Liverpool paid the Hungarian’s 70 million euro (£60 million, $76 million) release clause.

Following the signing of Argentine World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister last month, the 22-year-old will add to the Reds’ midfield options.

Liverpool was looking to upgrade its midfield after finishing 5th in the Premier League last year which stopped them from qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in seven years.

Midfielders James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all left the club at the end of last season when their contracts ended.

Szoboszlai will take Keita’s number 8  jersey, following in the footsteps of one of his childhood heroes, Steven Gerrard.

Since joining Leipzig in January 2021, Szoboszlai has scored 20 goals and contributed 22 assists in 91 games, helping the club win the German Cup and finish in the top 4 of the Bundesliga for the previous two seasons.

Following Christopher Nkunku’s arrival at Chelsea, Szoboszlai is the second Leipzig star to make a lucrative transfer to the Premier League in recent weeks.

And there might be a larger deal on the way, with Manchester City apparently interested in a  deal for Leipzig center-back Josko Gvardiol, which could make the Croatian the world’s most expensive defender.
