Vijayadashami, one of the most anticipated Hindu holidays, will take place on October 2, 2025, after starting on September 28, 2025. This ten-day celebration, which is particularly elaborate in West Bengal, honors Maa Durga’s conquest of Mahishasura and represents the everlasting triumph of good over evil.
During this holy season, devotees from all over India and outside take part in ceremonies, visit pandals, and take in cultural performances. After nine days of combat, the buffalo monster Mahishasura was vanquished by the goddess Durga, whose divine might is celebrated at Durga Puja. It is a celebration of cultural togetherness, faith, and strength. Devotees honor Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi in addition to Maa Durga.
Important Durga Puja 2025 Rituals
1. Maha Shashthi (Bodhon): This signifies the advent of Goddess Durga on Earth and the start of Durga Puja, in which she and her family are invoked through rites and prayers.
2. Maha Saptami (Navapatrika Snan): Nine sacred plants are worshipped as Navapatrika, which stands for Durga’s might, on Maha Saptami (Navapatrika Snan). Rituals that emphasize the goddess’ nurturing role are used to bathe and decorate the idol.
3. Maha Ashtami: The festival’s holiest day. With tremendous devotion, devotees give prayers, flowers, and bhog to Maa Durga at Sandhi Puja and Kumari Puja.
4. Maha Navami: Maha Aarti and Homa (fire ritual) are performed by devotees on Maha Navami. Families come together to partake in traditional bhog and prasad, dance, music, and cultural events.
5. Vijayadashami (Sindoor Khela & Visarjan): Devotees say goodbye to Goddess Durga on the last day. In Sindoor Khela, married ladies smear vermilion as a sign of strength and wealth. The goddess returns to her heavenly home with the immersion of idols (Durga Visarjan).
Additional Important Ceremonies
Adhivasa and Bodhana are invocation rites offered to Maha Shashthi. During Ashtami, Sandhi Puja and Pushpanjali are special prayers. Homa and Kumari Puja: worshiping young girls as divine forms and performing sacred fire rites. Bengali-only Sindoor Khela and Dhunuchi Naach combine devotion with cultural diversity.
