Ed Woodward to hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a new three-year contract at Manchester United

Despite Manchester United concluding the season without a trophy, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be backed with a new contract and summer signings overseen by outgoing executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

United was defeated in the Europa League final this week, but the club’s board sees the campaign as a step forward after finishing second in the Premier League and reaching their first final under Solskjaer.

The Norwegian, 48, has one season remaining on his current contract and will begin negotiations for a three-year extension. He will also be aided by up to four new recruits to improve his squad as he attempts to cut the gap on champions Manchester City.

Jadon Sancho is Solskjaer’s top objective as a wide forward, a position that needs to be strengthened. United’s management also wants a striker, a young central midfielder, and a defender. United would also prefer to sign a young centre midfielder in the mold of Rennes’ Eduardo Camavinga, but this would be a player for the future rather than someone who could make an immediate impact.

Woodward will continue to oversee United’s transfer strategy for as long as he is the club’s executive vice-chairman, with his exit set for the end of 2021.

Solskjaer has stated that he will not consider the season a success unless they win against Villarreal on Wednesday, and he has additional team issues to deal with such as with Donny van de Beek and his role in the team, Paul Pogba’s contract which expires in 2022 and goalkeeping issues as United need a keeper they can trust.

Do you think this is the right decision or should United look for a different manager? Perhaps Zidane or Conte, who’s just left their respective positions?
