Euro 2020: Huge blow for Netherlands as injury rules out Donny Van de Beek

Donny Van de Beek, midfielder for the Netherlands, has been forced to withdraw from the Euro 2020 team due to an injury, the Dutch football body KNVB announced on Tuesday.

The ailment was not disclosed, but the KNVB stated that, after examinations it was determined that he would not be able to play in the competition which begins this weekend.

The 24 years old Van de Beek has 19 caps. He had trained separately from the rest of the squad, along with Matthijs de Ligt, on Monday. With a groin injury, the defender missed the Dutch’s last warm-up match against Georgia on Sunday. Even though the Dutch had the right to change Van de Beek before their first game, the KNVB indicated coach Frank de Boer would not do so.

In a difficult debut season in England, Van de Beek, who joined Manchester United from Ajax last summer, only made four Premier League starts.

He made his last appearance in a 7-0 win over Gibraltar in on of the World Cup qualifier matches in March.

On Sunday, the Netherlands will play their first game against Ukraine placed in Group C. The other group matches against Austria and North Macedonia will be played on 17th June And 21st June respectively.

The Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam will host all duels.
