Former South Korean footballer, Yoo Sang-Chul who stared in the countries run to the World Cup semi-final in 2002, has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 49-year-old.
The midfielder was a key player in the South Korean team when they took the world by surprise under Guus Hiddink at the 2002 World Cup, which was coming hosted by the country with Japan but lost against Germany by 1-0. Yoo scored against Poland to kick off the group stage with a victory and they defeated powerhouse teams such as Italy and Spain.
He played for 16 years in Asia, playing in Japan’s Jleague and his country’s K-league and moved to coach most recently at Incheon United in 2019 but got diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that year that forced him to move off the field and go into treatment.
Korean football association confirmed his passing away and said that we will forever remember the shouts and glory of that day with you, Rest in peace. Fans were shocked by the news of his passing away and left messages for him saying, Thank you for gifting us with a great memory, which will cherish us forever and you’ll be a hero to us all.
