Farah Khan opens up about self-care after 50; reveals hilarious mix-up on family holiday

Farah Khan has always been known for her sharp humour, busy work schedule and no-nonsense personality. But the filmmaker and choreographer recently admitted that taking care of her looks was never a priority until a surprising incident on a family holiday made her rethink her approach to ageing.

Speaking to Soha Ali Khan on her YouTube podcast, Farah revealed that earlier in her life she barely thought about grooming or skincare. She explained that she remained naturally thin for years and worked such long hours that she didn’t even find time for a simple blow-dry. But things changed after she turned 50. She said with a laugh, “When the car gets old, it needs more servicing, so send it to the garage.” She shared that she now visits a skin doctor and takes hair vitamins regularly because, according to her, a little extra care becomes necessary with age.

She also added that her children played an important role in this change. Farah said she did not want her kids to feel embarrassed or think their grandmother had come to drop them off at school.

The turning point, however, came during a family vacation. Farah recalled that she was overweight at the time, and a housekeeping staff member mistook her husband Shirish Kunder for her son. She said, “A lady came to clean the room, saw Shirish and asked me to tell my ‘son’ to step out. Shirish just laughed and later told the kids, ‘They thought I was your brother.’” Farah shared that the incident stayed with her, and she decided it was time to take better care of herself. It eventually took her seven years to lose weight and feel healthier.

Farah and Shirish first met on the sets of Main Hoon Na in 2004, where she made her directorial debut and he worked as the film’s editor. Their friendship slowly turned into love, leading to their wedding later that year. Despite their eight-year age gap, the couple built a strong bond rooted in humour and creative understanding.
