Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has shared his excitement after Boong, a Manipuri coming-of-age drama co-produced by him, received a nomination at the 2026 BAFTA Awards. The film has been shortlisted in the Best Children and Family Film category, marking a rare moment of international recognition for regional Indian cinema.
With this nomination, Boong stands out as the only Indian film to be acknowledged this year, while Farhan Akhtar becomes the sole Indian filmmaker represented in the category. Speaking to HT City, Farhan described the recognition as deeply rewarding for the entire team. He said the nomination validated the emotional core of the film and the values it brings to family audiences.
Farhan noted that while he continues to be associated with large-scale commercial projects, including upcoming ventures like Don 3, Boong reflects his commitment to backing meaningful stories from diverse parts of the country. He added that the team feels honoured that a global platform like BAFTA recognised the film’s message and sensitivity.
Set in a Manipuri village, Boong follows the journey of a young boy living with his single mother as they struggle with the mysterious disappearance of his father, Joykumar. Once away for work, Joykumar vanishes without explanation, leaving behind questions and emotional uncertainty. Determined to bring happiness back into his mother’s life, the boy sets out with his closest friend on a heartfelt search for his missing father. The BAFTA nomination has placed Boong firmly on the global map, highlighting the power of intimate, locally rooted stories to resonate with international audiences.
