Ferrari signs first female driver to their academy

The most successful F1 team of all time, Ferrari, has announced a 16-year-old Dutch Go-Karter, Maya Weug, as the first female member to join the Ferrari’s Driver Academy.

After undergoing series of tests at a five-day scouting camp, which not only assessed racers’ speed but also measured their potential, Weug had created history. She ultimately became a Ferrari protégé by winning the FIA’s Girls on Track Rising Stars programme. The event took place last week at the Scuderia’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy. She will undertake a full season in the Formula 4 championship.

Motorsport’s push for diversity has enjoyed a milestone moment with 20 female drivers participating in the evaluation camp from five continents, before they were whittled down to a final four. Weug, who tried a kart for the first time aged seven eventually came out on top. She lists former FDA graduate Charles Leclerc as her favorite driver.
