Fire breaks out on garbage-carrying train in Mumbai’s Kurla, suburban services briefly affected

One of the coaches of a train carrying trash and sludge caught fire on Thursday night, affecting train services on the Central Railway’s main line. This muck special rake was stationed in the siding line at Kurla Railway Station when the tragedy occurred. This was the first coach of the special train used to dump trash and mud gathered from rail lines and tracks, according to Central Railway officials. The coach caught fire at approximately 8:30 p.m.

“This muck special coach that caught fire was standing at the EMU siding in Kurla. We started doing everything we could to put out the fire right away,” a CR official stated.

However, they had to turn off the overhead cable (OHE), which feeds 25000 volt energy to trains. According to another CR official, the OHE was shut off between Vidyavihar and Sion railway stations from 20.38 to 20.55 to extinguish the fire.

As a result, rail traffic on the UP Slow (towards CSMT) line was briefly suspended until the fire was extinguished. “The fire was extinguished at 8.55 p.m., and the OHE was quickly restored, allowing train services to resume,” according to a CR spokesman.
