What is an electric vehicle?
The name sums itself up, an electric vehicle may be powered through a collector system run by electricity from off-vehicle sources or may be self contained with a battery, solar panels or an electric generator to generate fuel to electricity. An electric vehicle may include, but are not limited to, rail vehicles, electric aircraft, spacecraft, four-wheeler, two wheelers.
What are types of Electric Vehicle?
Well there are different types of electric vehicles and here are a few types for you:
1) Ground Vehicles-
There are sub categories for this just to make it easier for understanding:
- Pure Electric Vehicles, which are powered completely by electric motors and run by power cells, solar panels, battery, etc.
- Hybrid Electric Vehicles, they are a combination of conventional powertrain with an electrical engine.
- Plug In Electric Vehicle, is any vehicle that can be recharged from any external source.
- Range Extended Electric Vehicle, which is powered by an electric motor and plug in battery.
What are On-and-Off road Electric Vehicles?
A few examples of On-road Electric Vehicle are, electric cars, electric buses, electric trucks, golf cart, milk floats, electric motorcycles and scooter.
Example of Off-road Electric Vehicle are, all-terrain electric vehicles and electric tractors.
2) Rail borne Vehicles-
It is easier to power electric vehicles through permanent overhead lines or rails due to the natural fixture of rail lines which results in eliminating the heavy onboard batteries. The electric trains, electric light rail systems, electric rapid transit are of common use today.
3) Airborne Vehicles-
Electric power for aircrafts have received great deal of experimentation. Flying electric aircraft include manned and unmanned aerial vehicles.
4) Sea borne Vehicles-
They can be run by power cells, nuclear power, fuel cells, electric motors, solar cells, batteries, and also Stirlings engine can be used to run electric motor driven propellers.
People often question the purpose of an electric vehicle, so firstly it will reduce our vulnerability to the price spikes and supply disruptions of petroleum as we are more than dependent on it. Secondly, it can reduce the emissions that contribute to the climate change and smog, which can only help better the health of public and reduce the ecological damage. Lastly, it will save you money and time!
Why India needs electric vehicles?
To control pollution; an estimated 74,000 premature deaths occurred due to air pollution from transportation tailpipe emissions in India in 2015, according to the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT).
In 2019, the Climate Risk Index 2020 released by the environment think tank, Germanwatch, which has mentioned that India’s rank has worsened from 2017 being on the 14th spot to 2018 on the 5th spot in the global vulnerability ladder. Which makes it more reasonable for India to make and invest in buying electric cars, as to fight against the reliance on fossil fuels.
Moving towards electric vehicles might help India to reduce the oil dependency while moving towards renewable and clean sources of energy.
