FX’s The English Teacher is officially coming back for a second season! The comedy series, which premiered in September 2024, has been renewed following a strong critical reception.
Starring Will & Grace alum Brian Jordan Alvarez, The English Teacher follows Evan Marquez, a gay high school teacher in Austin, Texas, as he navigates the personal, professional, and political aspects of his job. FX Entertainment President Nick Grad praised the show’s creative excellence, calling it “one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024” and expressing excitement for its return.
Season 1 received nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and the WGA, further cementing its success. However, the show also faced controversy when Alvarez was accused of sexual harassment by his former friend and The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo co-star, Jon Ebeling. Ebeling first shared his allegations on Instagram in August 2024 before expanding on them in New York Magazine.
FX responded with a statement saying that Ebeling never formally raised concerns with the network but declined to comment further. Despite the controversy, Alvarez remains central to the show, serving as its creator, writer, lead actor, and executive producer.
With its renewal, The English Teacher will continue exploring Evan’s world, and fans will have to wait and see how the show evolves in its second season.
