Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gangster lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail, is costing his family ₹35-40 lakh annually, according to a cousin. Bishnoi, whose real name is Balkaran Brar, hails from a wealthy family, with his father owning 110 acres of land and serving as a constable in the Haryana Police. Ramesh Bishnoi, 50, revealed that the family never expected Lawrence, a law graduate from Panjab University, to enter the criminal world.
Born in Punjab’s Firozpur, Bishnoi adopted the name Lawrence during his school years on the advice of his aunt. Despite their affluent background, his involvement in high-profile criminal activities has made headlines, including the recent fatal shooting of Maharashtra politician Baba Siddique, a close friend of actor Salman Khan.
Bishnoi’s gang has also been linked to the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Additionally, Canadian authorities have accused his gang of carrying out violent acts on Canadian soil in alleged collaboration with Indian government agents, a claim India denies.
Bishnoi remains under investigation by Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for multiple cases. In August 2023, the Union home ministry extended an order preventing Bishnoi from being transferred out of Sabarmati jail for any reason, maintaining tight restrictions on his movement.
