German National arrested at IGI Airport with cocaine; dies at hospital

On Wednesday, police officials informed PTI about a 77-year-old German national of Indian descent who had been detained in relation to the purported recovery of illicit goods from the IGI airport and passed away while receiving care at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in West Delhi.

Based on information provided by Interpol, Ashok Kumar was taken into custody by the CBI on July 26 at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Kumar was accused by the CBI agents of hiding six kilogrammes of cocaine in 270 capsules that were tucked inside two plush toys. A police source said that after being in police custody for five days, Kumar was transferred to Tihar Jail.

He was admitted to the DDU Hospital on August 14 after complaining of unease, and the source stated that on August 27, he passed away while receiving treatment. According to Delhi Police, they have contacted the German embassy to request information on his family members so that an autopsy and additional legal actions can be carried out. Rohit Pratap Singh, Kumar’s attorney, told PTI that he attempted to contact Kumar’s family members, but they were unwilling to travel to India.

Singh quoted, “His brother, who is based in the US, spoke with me through e-mail. He suspected some foul play in his death. His post mortem examination is yet to be done as the local police awaits his family’s or the German embassy’s consent for further legal proceedings. He also said, the postmortem examination will determine the precise reason of his death.
