With Suits LA on the horizon, Ginette Torres recently took a moment to reflect on Pearson, the first attempt to expand the Suits universe.
Torres, who played the sharp and commanding Jessica Pearson in Suits, exited the main series after a few seasons before returning in the 2019 spin-off Pearson. This new chapter took a different approach, shifting away from high-powered legal battles to focus on politics, with Jessica stepping into the role of a fixer for newly elected Chicago mayor Bobby Novak (Morgan Spector). Despite its fresh angle, Pearson struggled to connect with audiences and was ultimately canceled after just one season.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Torres opened up about her experience with the show, emphasizing her deep involvement as both lead actress and executive producer. Unlike Suits, which revolved around elite legal professionals, she wanted Pearson to explore the lives of everyday people.
“I’m very proud of it. I’m very proud of what we were able to do,” Torres shared. “I will say it is the show I wanted to make. I wish we had had more time.”
She admitted that while she was satisfied with what they accomplished, the cancellation cut short their ability to truly dive into the world they were building.
“I wish we’d had more time to tell more stories, to dive a little bit deeper into that world,” she explained. “Because I had often said that whereas Suits was about the top 5 percent, I wanted Pearson to be about everybody else. And I believe that we were able to accomplish that in a really special way.”
Although Pearson is now in the rearview, the Suits universe is getting another shot with Suits LA, which takes the franchise to the West Coast. The new series stars Stephen Amell as Ted Black, alongside Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg.
Fans won’t have to wait long—the highly anticipated Suits LA premieres on NBC on February 23 at 9 PM ET.
