The CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. Sundar Pichai sent an emailed notice saying Google will henceforth grade executives based on their increase in human resource staffing and fulfilment of their workforce diversity goals according to a report by NDTV.
This is because one of the few women in artificial intelligence, working in the company who was also black was fired recently. Pichai sent an email notice to the employees explaining the changes. The email also had comments by the chief of the artificial intelligence wing of Google, Jeff Dean. He said in the email, “I understand we could have and should have handled the situation with more sensitivity. And for that I am sorry.” He fired a Black employee named Timnit Gebru.
He acknowledged that his behaviour has offended black and female employees and led them to question their belongingness in the company, although he did not directly apologise to Timnit in particular in the email.
