Google tries to subvert Australian content payment law by opening paid-for news platform in drive

Google on Friday launched its own platform providing news the company itself has paid for in Australia. This is to prove that the Canberra law that demands paying news publications is not necessary for the company.

The platform named News Showcase was already operating in Brazil and Germany but its Australia launch got delayed because of the new law that required Google and Facebook to pay Australian news outlets for news content. The law is currently before parliamentary enquiry. Google will now pay seven Australian news outlets including Canberra Times to have them featured on its News Showcase platform. They also said that they are looking forward to partnership with more news outlets.

Reuters was the first global news outlet to be signing a deal with Google to feature on their News Showcase platform.
