Government detects GST fraud of ₹20,124 crore: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government of India has identified GST fraud of 20,124 crore from November 9, 2020 to January 31, 2021.

The government is conducting a special drive all over the country to identify deceitful organizations availing and passing on Input Tax Credit (ITC) illegally using fake invoices, said FM in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Since the initiation of the special drive on November 9, 2020 to January 31, 2021, officers have booked 2,692 cases that involved GST/ITC fraud of 20,124.19 crore. A total of 857.75 crore was recovered and 282 people were arrested.

Minister of State for Finance Anurag Singh Thakur said that 2,223.88 crores of undisclosed income has been detected by the Income Tax department from April-December 2020.

Thakur further added, “A robust risk profiling mechanism has been put in place to identify and monitor high-risk cases primarily through the use of information technology and appropriate action is taken as per the law.”
