Greta Lee claims ‘There’s more room to grow for Asian representation in Hollywood’

Greta Lee, who was born in Los Angeles (USA) to American parents who had just arrived from South Korea before she was born, is pleased with the improvement in Hollywood’s stereotyped portrayal of Asians. She does, however, acknowledge that the circumstance still calls for significant change. Greta recently performed in Past Lives, where she took on the character of a young woman whose family leaves South Korea as well.

Questions keep coming up because we’re still talking about this. This indicates that there is still opportunity for improvement [in terms of eradicating the prejudices attached to Asians]. It’s clear that the audience is changing, she says. The actor, 40, received praise for his role in the movie. “We aren’t talking about people or cultural specificity,” she continues. I have hope for the future. I think this movie will serve as a gauge for where we are going.

Lee also provided Lyla’s voice in the recently released Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Which of the movies she’s made so far is most dear to her heart? She responds, “It’s Past Lives,” adding, “It tore me to shreds. As an actor, I think it’s quite uncommon for me to understand the impact I might have on a viewer. It’s not your typical love tale.

There are no graphic or heartbreaking battles. Instead, it is a very thorough examination of how people behave. That feat was both exceedingly difficult and humbling.
