Ronnie Screwvala’s upGrad had some visitors on July 19, as GST official paid a visit to the startup’s office premises in Mumbai for a routine survey, says the edtech unicorn in a statement.
Head of Legal, at upGrad, Koell Hemdev stated, “It’s a routine survey and we are fully compliant and cooperating with the department.”
This is not the first time that a startup came under spotlight of government officials.
As earlier, Byju’s, India’s most valued startup faced scrutiny when Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches on three of the office locations. Later, in June, Byju’s was once again in news as it came under scrutiny of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).
Speaking of upGrad, it was founded by Screwvala, Mayank Kumar, and Phalgun Kompalli. The startup is an education platform of higher education for working professionals. The company has raised more than $400 million in equity and is backed by Singapore’s IFC Asset Management, Temsak Group, James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems and others.
