1.Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein
This film marked the debut of Madhavan in Bollywood and brought him nationwide stardom. In this beautiful movie, he played the role of Maddy, a young guy who loves a girl madly and can go to any extent to get his love. Madhavan’s charming personality, brilliant appearance and on-screen chemistry with Dia Mirza in this movie made him the heartthrob of many.
2. Rang De Basanti
One of the most iconic films in Hindi cinema, Rang De Basanti is a story of revolution. Madhavan takes on a more challenging role here, different from his romantic leads earlier. Instead, he portrays a supporting character, the skilled flight lieutenant Ajay Singh Rathod who loses his life due to faulty parts in his aircraft. His realistic performance rendered so much likability and charm to his character that Ajay’s death became all the more poignant.
3.Guru
In Guru, Madhavan plays the role of the daring reporter Shyam Saxena who wishes to expose the fraudulent means Guru (Abhishek Bachchan) uses to further his business. He is also the love interest of Meenu (Vidya Balan), who suffers from multiple sclerosis. Madhavan effortlessly shows Shyam’s turmoil as his lover nears her death and the determination of the reporter, to tell the truth.
4. Saala Khadoos
One of India’s most underrated sports movies, ‘Saala Khadoos’ tells the story of a failed boxer named Adi Tomar who mentors a young lady and fulfils his dreams by helping her to become a globally celebrated boxer. Madhavan as the boxing trainer is tremendous and his way of approaching the character shows how dedicated he is towards his roles!
5. 3 Idiots
Perhaps one of his most well-known films, and indeed one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time, the award-winning 3 Idiots see Madhavan in collaboration with Aamir Khan and Sharman Joshi. Maddy plays the role of Farhan Qureshi, a student forced to pursue engineering instead of his real passion, wildlife photography. He brings the perfect balance of comedy alongside emotional complexity to his character and was also nominated for a Filmfare Award and an International Indian Film Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actor.
6. Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015)
These two highly successful films saw Madhavan portray the lead in a romantic drama again after quite a long time. However, his role as Manu certainly showed great development since his earlier days as the romantic hero. Madhavan holds his own in this story, which highlights the female protagonist of the film, played by Kangana Ranaut.
