Heathrow airport, London has decided to charge departing passengers with additional 8.90 pounds ($12.40) to cover the losses incurred during the pandemic as air travel was shut down.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the United Kingdom has permitted the airport to collect tariffs under a protocol to cover costs for its utilities, baggage, and check-in services. The pandemic has had adverse effects on the airport as it reported a 2 billion pound loss for 2020 as the number of passengers was down by 73%.
The new Airport Cost Recovery Charge will be imposed till the end of 2021 to enable Heathrow to cover its costs according to general notice. The passengers will also be charged a 4.44-pound tariff for each passenger luggage.
