Amid a heavy rain forecast across Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged information technology (IT) companies to permit their employees to work from home until October 18. The move is aimed at ensuring safety as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region from October 14 to 16.
In response to the weather warnings, schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts will remain closed on October 15. District officials have assured that preparations are in place to handle any potential flooding.
The IMD reports a low-pressure system forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal, expected to intensify and bring significant rainfall, particularly on October 14 and 15.
During a monsoon preparedness meeting on Monday, CM Stalin reviewed the state’s readiness to combat the effects of the heavy downpour. Chennai Corporation officials confirmed that 990 pumps, 57 tractors with pump sets, 36 motorboats, and essential supplies such as bleach powder and phenol are on standby for emergency use.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected flood-prone areas, including the Narayanapuram Lake and Ambedkar Road canals in Chennai, to assess potential risks and take necessary preventive measures. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant as the rain intensifies in the coming days.
