Roads, power, and water supply systems in Himachal Pradesh are all being badly disrupted by the ongoing heavy rains. As of Sunday morning, 637 distribution transformers (DTRs), 115 water supply schemes, and 361 roads—including three national highways—remain shut, according to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA).
Since June 20, 261 people have perished as a result of the ongoing monsoon fury. According to SDMA, 136 of these deaths were caused by rain-related events like landslides, flash floods, and house collapses, and 125 were caused by traffic accidents brought on by slick roads and poor visibility. According to officials, Kullu has 63 roads closed due to landslides, including NH-305 near Khanag, while Mandi district has the most severe road connection problems, with 201 obstructions, including the vital NH-03.
At Tinku Nalla, Kinnaur also reported a disturbance on NH-05. Mandi district experienced the most power supply disruption, with 448 DTRs damaged. Lahaul-Spiti district followed, with 112 transformers failing as a result of high-tension line failures.
The most severely impacted water delivery systems are still in Kullu and Mandi, where numerous systems have been left inoperable by landslides and intense rains. According to the HPSDMA, repair efforts are being carried out on a war footing, but they are being hampered by frequent landslides and constant rains.
As the state prepares for further rain in the days ahead, officials have advised citizens to avoid needless travel, particularly in places that are already at risk.
