Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time IPL champions, are gearing up for the IPL 2025 mega auction, set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25. With INR 45 crores in their purse, MI is preparing to revamp their squad while retaining their legacy of nurturing talent like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who grew into cricketing superstars.
Mumbai Indians’ retention strategy
Ahead of the mega auction, MI has retained five key players, all Indian stars:
- Jasprit Bumrah – INR 18 crore
- Suryakumar Yadav – INR 16.35 crore
- Hardik Pandya – INR 16.35 crore
- Rohit Sharma – INR 16.30 crore
- Tilak Varma – INR 8 crore
With these five players secured, MI has a solid core in place but plenty of work to do to complete their squad.
How many players can MI buy?
- Total spots available: Each IPL team can have a maximum of 25 players and a minimum of 18 players in their squad.
- Current roster: MI has retained five players, leaving them with 20 spots to fill.
- Overseas quota: Each team can include up to 8 overseas players, and since MI’s retained list comprises only Indian players, they can purchase 8 overseas players and 12 Indian players during the auction.
What’s next for MI?
With a robust budget and a strong core, Mumbai Indians are expected to make strategic buys at the auction, blending young talent with experienced players. The mega auction will be a critical phase for MI as they aim to maintain their dominance and build a winning combination for the IPL 2025 season.
