How to speed up game downloads on PlayStation

It’s no surprise that PS5 games are getting larger—both in gameplay and in file size. These days, many popular and upcoming titles are over 100GB, which means downloading them can take a while. Whether you’re downloading a game through PlayStation Plus or installing one from a disc (yes, those need updates too!), you’ll likely face some wait time before you can jump into the action. But don’t worry—we’ve got some tips to help you speed up those downloads so you can spend less time staring at progress bars and more time gaming.

Why your Internet connection matters

The speed at which your PS5 downloads games is heavily influenced by your internet connection. Your ISP (internet service provider) sets your speed limit, but you can take a few steps to maximize how much of that bandwidth reaches your PS5.

Step 1: Plug in for a Better Connection
If possible, connect your PS5 directly to your router using an Ethernet cable. While Wi-Fi has improved a lot, it’s still not as fast or stable as a wired connection, especially for downloading huge files.

Step 2: Improve Wi-Fi Speeds
If using a cable isn’t an option, try moving your PS5 closer to the router. The fewer walls and obstacles between the console and the router, the stronger and faster your Wi-Fi signal will be. Even doing this temporarily during a download can make a noticeable difference.

Step 3: Free Up Your Network
Got a lot of devices connected to your Wi-Fi? Phones, TVs, laptops, and other consoles sharing the network can slow everything down. While your PS5 is downloading, try disconnecting other devices or pausing their internet activity. This will give your PS5 all the bandwidth it needs.

Close apps and use rest mode for maximum speed

Your PS5 is like a multitasking machine—it can run games, stream movies, and download content all at once. But this multitasking can slow your downloads. To speed things up:

  1. Close all other apps and games running in the background.
  2. For the best results, put your console into Rest Mode while downloading. This ensures the system isn’t juggling other tasks and dedicates its resources to the download.

Make sure Rest Mode is set up to allow downloads:

  • Go to Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode and enable downloads during Rest Mode.

With these simple tweaks, you’ll cut down on waiting time and get back to gaming faster. Happy downloading! 🎮
