Ibrahima Konate to join Liverpool, confirmed

Ibrahima Konate to Liverpool has been confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano. According to Romano, Konate has agreed to a five-year contract to relocate to Merseyside. To that aim, it looks that the agreement is nearing completion.

At the heart of Leipzig’s defense, the 21-year-old has been brilliant with Dayot Upamecano. Indeed, he has already decided to join his current manager, Julian Nagelsmann, at Bayern Munich for the 2019-20 season. Konate now appears to be on the move as Jurgen Klopp tries to improve a defense that has been plagued by injuries this season.

With both youth and experience on his side, the Frenchman checks a number of boxes as the Reds attempt to enhance their center-back options in the coming months. Liverpool will pay the release clause to RB Leipzig in the next days [around €35m] in order to finalize the signing of Konaté.

The team signed Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in January, although midfielder Fabinho has been used at the defense on multiple occasions this season. Davies has yet to make an appearance for the Reds, and it is unclear whether they will make Kabak’s loan deal permanent. Konate has represented France at the youth level on multiple occasions and has made 94 appearances for Leipzig since joining them in 2017.

Chelsea was also rumored to be interested in Konate, but it appears Anfield will be his next stop.
