IMA Suspends IMA membership of Ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College

In the midst of a CBI investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Kolkata-based RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) suspended the membership of former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh on Wednesday. The disciplinary committee of the association decided to suspend Ghosh’s IMA membership. He serves as the vice president of the association’s Kolkata branch.

The Indian Medical Association issued an order stating that the committee, which was appointed by Dr. R V Asokan, national president of the IMA, met on Wednesday suo-motu to discuss the postgraduate resident doctor’s case of rape and murder, as well as the events that followed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

According to the directive, the Indian Medical Association’s disciplinary committee “unanimously decided to suspend you forthwith from the membership of Indian Medical Association.”

“They had put up their grievances against you (Ghosh) in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them,” the order said.”The IMA Bengal state branch as well as certain associations’ of doctors also have demanded action citing the nature of disrepute brought by you to the profession on the whole,” it said.
