Bollywood filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently opened up about the failure of his 2020 film Love Aaj Kal 2, starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan. In a conversation with Komal Nahata on his YouTube channel Game Changers, the director admitted that he could have made different creative choices.
“I could have done 2-3 things differently. I tried to put too much into it, and that’s why it became heavy. The ease of the film was compromised. It became thick, and people didn’t understand what happened. It seemed like it wasn’t coming from the heart,” Imtiaz said. He also noted that the film lacked freshness, which contributed to its underwhelming response.
Following the film’s failure, Imtiaz became hesitant about making sequels. He explained, “Whenever you are making a sequel, you should have a proper reason for it. I had that reason, but I wasn’t able to express it. Unless it is really necessary, I am not interested in making sequels. But never say never Rockstar 2 may be nice.”
Love Aaj Kal 2, a sequel to the 2009 hit starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, failed to impress both critics and audiences. Despite featuring a strong cast, including Randeep Hooda and Arushi Sharma, it earned only ₹56.9 crore worldwide. While Imtiaz has not announced his next project, he revealed that he has several scripts ready and is waiting for the right time to bring them to life.
