Incentives for scrapping old vehicles to be announced soon

Incentives for the new vehicle scraping policy are to be announced in the next two to three weeks, road transport and highways secretary Giridhar Aramane said on Friday.

The transport ministry which is outlining the subtleties of the vehicle scraping policy announced in the budget for FY22, will share the details of the policy soon.

A major disincentive as a part of the policy is that green tax will be levied on vehicles older than 15 years. The Government is planning to increase the expense of registration renewal of individual vehicles, and fitness certification fee for commercial vehicles, in an offer to deter more older vehicles from handling out and about.

Giridhar Aramane said that if a vehicle fails the mandatory automated fitness certification test, the owner will have to scrap the vehicle.
