India drop 15 places to 117th in FIFA rankings, worst in seven years, after disappointing AFC Asian Cup

After their disappointing performance in the AFC Asian Cup, the Indian men’s national football team dropped to 117th in the latest FIFA rankings. India dropped 15 ranks from 102 in the new FIFA men’s world ranking, which was released on Thursday, following the team’s first-round exit from the continental tournament in Doha, last month.

Following the CAF Africa Cup of Nations and AFC Asian Cup matches, there has been a lot of change down the standings. Among the African teams, Ivory Coast moved 10 places to 39th, earning the benefits of their continental victory on home soil, which came after a fascinating AFCON campaign.

AFCON runner-ups Nigeria is now 28th, up 14 places, but they are no match for Angola (93rd, up 24), a team they defeated in the last eight, who are the biggest climbers in the new world ranking. Qatar (37th, up 21 points) leads the way with 92.04 points after successfully defending their continental title at home.

Senegal (17th, up 3) breaks new ground after losing in a shootout to the eventual winners Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16, while Tajikistan (99th, up 7) makes their first-ever appearance in the top 100 to kick off their Asian Cup campaign.

Not much has changed in the top 10 world rankings.
