India loses 51st position and slides to 53rd in EIUs Democracy Index Report

India has lost his previously held position at 51st post and fallen down to 53rd position in 2020 Democracy Index’s global ranking. The report mentions that democratic backsliding by the authorities and crackdowns on civil liberties has led to the decline of India in the ranking system.

The report, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit also mentions Indian Democracy as the “flawed democracy” but it is still ranked higher than most of it’s neighboring countries. India’s score has fallen from 6.9 in 2019 to 6.61 in the Index.

Norway has topped that charts with Sweden, Iceland, New Zealand and Canada following closely behind and making it in the top five.

The report mentions 23 countries as full democracies, 52 as flawed, 35 as hybrids & 57 as authoritarian regimes out of the 167 countries.

Along with India; US, France, Belgium & Brazil has been tagged as flawed democracies.
