India summons Maldivian envoy amid row over ministers’ remarks against PM Modi

After the mocking statements made about Prime Minister Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned Maldiv’s’ High Commissioner to India, Ibrahim Shaheeb.

The Union Ministry summoned the High Commissioner in response to the recent social media row over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.

Ministers Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid were suspended by the Maldives government for criticizing Prime Minister Modi in their posts. The suspension comes after India raised the matter with the island nation on Sunday.
Minister Mariyam Shiuna labelled PM Modi a “clown” and a “puppet” in a now-deleted post after he shared images from his visit to Lakshadweep and promoted the Indian island as a tourist and vacation destination.
Other Maldives ministers, including MP Zahid Rameez, criticized PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep after pictures of the tour went viral on social media.
“The move is great. However, the idea of competing with us is delusional. How can they provide the service we offer? How can they be so clean? The permanent smell in the rooms will be the biggest downfall,” stated Rameez.
The Maldivian government has condemned any remarks made against India and Prime Minister Modi, claiming that they do not reflect the views of the Maldivian government.
