Indian-American civil rights attorney nominated as federal judge by Joe Biden

An Indian-American civil rights attorney has been nominated by the US President Joe Biden as a federal judge in the State of Connecticut. To serve on the District Court of Connecticut, federal prosecutor Sarala Vidya Nagala will become the first judge of South Asian descent, as confirmed by the Senate.

Since the year 2017, Sarala Vidya Nagala has been serving in the US Attorney’s Office in the District of Connecticut as the Deputy Chief of the Major Crimes Unit. Including as Hate Crimes Coordinator, serving in a number of leadership roles, Nagala had joined the US Attorney’s Office in 2012. From 2009 to 2012, Nagala was in San Francisco, California as an associate at Munger, Tolles and Olson.

For the Ninth Circuit from 2008 to 2009, Nagala commenced her legal career as a law clerk for Judge Susan Graber on the US Court of Appeals. In the year 2008, Nagala received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law along with her Bachelors of Arts degree from Stanford University in 2005.

Along with four other new candidates, Vidya Nagala’s nomination came in for the federal bench and two for District of Columbia courts. According to a statement said by the White House on Tuesday, all of the candidates are experienced, qualified, extraordinary and devoted to the rule of law and US Constitution. In terms of both personal and professional backgrounds, the nation’s courts reflect the diversity that is one of the greatest assets as a country, the nomination of Nagala and others continues to fulfil Biden’s above mentioned promise.
