Indian coast guard receives appreciation from UNHCR for helping Rohingya refugees

The Indian coast guard helped a boat carrying Rohingya refugees with food, water, and medical care sailing in the Andaman sea.

The boat had left the shore of Bangladesh fourteen days ago. The boat then broke down at sea. UNHCR reported that the 90 people aboard were suffering from acute dehydration, their families worry they might have died.

UNHCR spokesperson Catherine Stubberfield appreciated the efforts of the Indian coast guard. She further added, “But given that the refugees are still adrift at sea, immediate disembarkation is absolutely critical to meeting their most basic human needs and ensuring that their safety is no longer threatened.”
