Indian fencer Bhavani Devi’s journey ends in Tokyo Olympics, but still created history

Indian fencer Bhavani Devi made a confident start on her Olympic debut and advanced to the second round after beating Tunisia’s Ben Azizi Nadia by 15-3 in the women’s sabre event at the Tokyo Games on Monday.

Bhavani Devi, a resident of Chennai, is the first Indian swordsman to qualify for the Olympics. Even though her journey in Tokyo came to an end. However, Bhavani has created history in fencing. She has become the first athlete from India to win a fencing match at the Olympics.

In the second round, Bhavani Devi was given a tough fight by France’s world number three Manon Brunet, and eventually lost 7-15. This match between the two lasted 09 minutes 42 seconds. Even though Bhavani has not been able to go far in Tokyo, but by winning the match in the Olympics, she has achieved the feat which will be discussed for years and years.

Bhavani, the first Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics, took an aggressive approach from the beginning. She took advantage of Azizi’s open ‘stance’. This helped her to score points. The 27-year-old Bhavani did not lose a single point in the first period of three minutes and took a strong 8-0 lead.
