On Saturday afternoon, Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister who is considered to have been the mastermind behind India’s economic reform agenda, was cremated in New Delhi at Nigambodh Ghat with full state honours.
In front of President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and prominent Congressmen, Manmohan Singh’s daughter lighted his cremation pyre at the crematorium. After Congress leaders honoured their late leader, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s farewell tour started Saturday morning from the AICC headquarters.
Amid cries of “Manmohan Singh Amar Rahe,” the procession of the flower-decked automobile bearing Manmohan Singh’s mortal remains departed the Congress headquarters.
Due to age-related health issues, Manmohan Singh passed away at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday evening.
He was ninety-two. From 2004 until 2014, Singh was prime minister for ten years. The Union home ministry has declared that the country would observe a seven-day national mourning in remembrance of the former prime minister, during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast nationwide.
