Indira Hridayesh, a veteran Congress leader and leader of opposition in Uttarakhand Assembly, has passed away in Delhi on Sunday.
According to her staff and the party leaders, Hridayesh suffered a heart attack.
Hridayesh, who was 80-years-old, on Saturday was in Delhi to take part in organisational meetings in view of the 2022 assembly polls.
She was an MLA from Haldwani in the Nainital District, who was a prominent face of the party in the Kumaon region and a contender of the party’s CM face in the state.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed condolence on the death of Indira Hridayesh.
On Twitter he posted saying that Dr. Indira Hridayesh Ji was at the ‘forefront’ of several community service efforts and she had made a mark as an effective legislator. He also mentioned that she had ‘rich administrative experience’. The prime minister was “saddened by her demise, condolences to her family and supporters.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolence on the death of Hridayesh. “Dr Indira Hridayesh Ji was at the forefront of several community service efforts. She made a mark as an ‘effective legislator’ and also had rich administrative experience. Saddened by her demise. Condolences to her family and supporters,” the prime minister posted on Twitter.
Rahul Gandhi, former Congress President, also took to twitter and said that Indira Hridayesh remained active for the social service and the Congress till her last breath. He also mentioned in his tweet how her social and political contributions are of an inspiration to him.
Tirath Singh Rawat and Yogi Adityanath also expressed condolences.
She was a member of the legislative council in undivided Uttar Pradesh for five times.
Indira Hridayesh was elected as an MLA in Uttarakhand in the years 2002, 2012, and 2017.
She served as a cabinet minister in the government of ND Tiwari, Vijay Bahuguna, and Harish Rawat.
Suryakant Dhasmana; senior Congress vice-president has said that Indira had a great organisational and administrative capability. She had the “legislative experience of 50 years”.
On Friday, she had taken part in the party’s protest against the rise in fuel prices in Haldwani.
On Saturday evening in Delhi, she took part in the organisational meeting regarding the 2022 polls and had directed her close confidants in Uttarakhand to make the preparations for a parivartan rath yatra.
Hridayesh’s last rites will be performed in Haldwani, at her home.
