Punjab Kings were dealt a blow just before their match against Delhi Capitals as their captain KL Rahul was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. Mayank Agarwal led the side in Rahul’s absence.
What an innings by the right-handed batsman. It was his debut as captain in IPL. He scored 99 in 58 balls to put PBKS in a fighting position. He ended with a run rate of 170.69 with a total of 8 fours and 4 sixes.
Punjab didn’t get off to a good start because Singh left cheaply. Gayle walked in, made a couple of big shots, and then was dismissed. Agarwal, the stand-in skipper, stayed and, along with Malan, provided some stability to the side, but the duo struggled to score freely.
Mayank has been clinical throughout his IPL career, with a total of 1950 runs in 95 matches so far. He came in for KL Rahul today and proved his worth in front of millions. PBKS totalled 166 in 20 overs with 6 wickets gone. Mayank scored more than half of his team’s runs and will now rely on the bowlers to seal the deal.
