IPL 2025 mega auction: Acceleration process explained, only 204 spots remain

The IPL 2025 mega auction is set to take place in Jeddah on November 24-25, with 574 players vying for just 204 available slots, leaving 370 players likely to go unsold. To streamline the process, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will implement an acceleration process during the auction.

What is the acceleration process?

The acceleration process allows franchises to focus on the most desired players from the remaining pool after the initial marquee and capped players are auctioned. Franchises are asked to submit a list of players they are interested in bidding for, ensuring that only shortlisted players are presented for further bidding.

Key highlights:

  • The process will start after player number 116 on the list of 574 players.
  • Franchises must nominate players from 117-574 for bidding by 10 PM on November 24.
  • Additional unsold players from the entire pool can also be shortlisted for further accelerated bidding.

Unlucky Ricky Bhui: First player in the accelerated phase

Ricky Bhui, listed at 117, will kick off the accelerated phase. With 458 players remaining in the pool after the first 116, only 88 players are expected to secure bids during this phase.

Players requested by franchises for IPL 2025

A total of 39 players from seven countries have been requested by franchises for this year’s auction. Among them, 10 players hail from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, while 8 players are from overseas, including:

  • Faridoon Dawoodzai (Afghanistan)
  • Michael Neser (Australia)
  • Oliver Davies (Australia)
  • Lizaad Williams (South Africa)
  • Will Young (New Zealand)
  • Dumindu Sewmina (Sri Lanka)
  • Ehsan Malinga (Sri Lanka)
  • Unmukt Chand (USA)

Auction order of bidding

  1. Marquee players: Two sets of six players will open the auction.
  2. Capped players: Presented in the following order:
    • Batters
    • All-rounders
    • Wicketkeepers
    • Fast bowlers
    • Spinners
  3. Select uncapped players
  4. Accelerated process: Shortlisted players from the remaining pool.

The IPL 2025 mega auction promises high drama, especially with marquee players like KL Rahul, Arshdeep Singh, and Rishabh Pant leading the list. The accelerated phase will provide franchises with a final chance to secure hidden gems or bolster their squads before the hammer falls for the last time.
