Is iOS 17 releasing in September 2023? Here’s everything we know so far

iOS 17, Apple’s next big iPhone software update, has recently been announced. While there aren’t many big changes to the software, the new version includes plenty of improvements underneath the hood as well as numerous new features like Posters, StandBy, NameDrop, and in-app changes to iPhones. The upgrade is scheduled to be rolled out to all compatible devices later this year and the rumoured iPhone 15 is slated to run iOS 17 right out of the box.

When is iOS 17 coming out?

iOS 17 was announced and presented at WWDC 2023 on June 5, but it won’t be available to iPhone users worldwide until the fall, most likely around mid-September. It’s expected to happen soon after the iPhone 15 launch event. In 2022, there was a five-day gap between the iPhone 14 and iOS 16 update and a six-day gap in 2021.

The release of a new version of iOS has been fairly consistent throughout the last couple of  years:

  • iOS 16: Monday, September 12, 2022
  • iOS 15: Monday, September 20, 2021
  • iOS 14: Wednesday, September 16, 2020
  • iOS 13: Thursday, September 19, 2019
  • iOS 12: Monday, September 17, 2018

We anticipate the release of iOS 17 will take place on September 11 or September 18, based on recent history.
