As Scottish friends reflect on their unforgettable weekend in Manchester in 1986, Mayflies on BBC1 will transport us back to the heady days of the music and vibes of the 1980s. The two-part drama, written by Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth Is Missing), is based on the renowned Andrew O’Hagan novel, and it stars Martin Compston from Line of Duty, Tony Curran (Ray Donovan), and Ashley Jensen from Agatha Raisin as the characters James, Tully, and Anna, respectively.
Therefore, before seeing Mayflies on BBC1 in December 2022, here is all you need to know.
James (Martin Compston) and Tully (Tony Curran) form a connection in the summer of 1986 in the movie Mayflies that is built on their shared love of music, movies, and a rebellious spirit at the height of Thatcher’s Britain. They plan an unforgettable weekend of young excesses in Manchester set to the finest soundtrack ever recorded at the conclusion of the school year. There is a pledge made to approach life in a new way.
Thirty years later, Tully calls James and tells him some awful news and a request that will put their friendship, love, and devotion to the ultimate test.
Martin Compston portrays senior James in Mayflies, while Tony Curran portrays older Tully. Thirty years have passed since their wild weekend in Manchester in 1986, and now they are reflecting on what transpired.
In the Ken Loach film Sweet Sixteen, Martin played a disturbed adolescent, which was his breakout performance. His most well-known role to date has been that of DS Steve Arnott in the criminal drama series Line of Duty. He also appeared in the popular series Vigil the previous year, and this year he appeared in the ITV show Our House. Besides Traces, The Nest, Mary Queen of Scots, and Death in Paradise, he has also acted in them. From 2003 through 2005, Martin portrayed Ewan Brodie on Monarch of the Glen.
In Ray Donovan, Tony Curran portrayed Sgt. Mikey ‘Rad’ Radulovic; in Your Honor, he portrayed Brett Swann in SEAL Team Frankie; and in The Flash, he portrayed Despero. Additionally, he appeared in the TV shows Roots, Crazyhead, Elementary, and Defiance.
Ashley Jensen, who portrayed Anna in Mayflies, had roles in Agatha Raisin and Extras.
As Mayflies has only recently begun production, a trailer won’t be ready until later in 2022.
