Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse banned in UAE?

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ the much awaited sequel to the Oscar-winning animated feature ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ has unexpectedly encountered a problem with its United Arab Emirates (UAE) release schedule.

According to sources with knowledge of the issue, the film, which was helmed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson and had a script by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Dave Callaham, failed to clear local censorship restrictions. The movie, which was supposed to premiere on June 22 just in time for the forthcoming Eid al-Adha celebration, has been delayed because it did not adhere to the nation’s strict censorship regulations. A blink-and-you-miss-it banner underlining the significance of preserving trans lives is one of the arguments put out for the ban.

It may be seen in the background of one frame. This brief portrayal appeared to be at odds with the “local customs and values” that programming in the area is required to uphold, especially when it is intended for younger people, as most animated films are. Although Middle Eastern censorship laws have loosened recently, there are still restrictions on both foreign and domestic content. As a result, a number of films, both live-action and animated, have been outlawed in the area. ‘Onward’ and ‘Lightyear’ were among the films that faced prohibitions in a number of nations; the latter was also not available on Disney+ in the area.

There have been censoring issues with even highly anticipated films like “Thor: Love and Thunder,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “West Side Story,” and “Eternals.” In the case of “Eternals,” Disney made modifications to meet local requirements, deleting any character public expressions of affection. In contrast, Disney declined to make the desired alterations for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and decided not to release the movie in a number of regions, including the Middle East, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Is SpDespite these failures, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has won praise from critics and got positive reviews from viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie presently has an astounding 96 percent rating. With nearly $120 million in domestic box office receipts as of the beginning of June, it has already outperformed its predecessor domestically in the United States. The movie has made $164.5 million internationally, bringing its global total to around $390 million.
