On May 28, 2023, Yellowjackets season 2 came to an end, leaving spectators with a melancholy aftertaste. The second season of Yellowjackets, which debuted during Memorial Day weekend, let the squad rediscover themselves by letting them accept their animalistic and sinister tendencies.
Although the second episode clarified the mystery behind Javi, Jackie, and Shauna’s bodies and addressed some of the lingering issues from season one, it did not succeed without further confusing the audience. But for now, one of the nagging issues that keep people up at night is when Yellowjackets’ third season will start airing.
Is Yellowjackets renewed for a third season?
Three months before the second season even aired, in December 2022, Showtime ordered a third season of the thriller series. The third season has been renewed, according to Chris McCarthy, president and chief executive officer of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks, who told Deadline that “we wanted to maximise the momentum by fast-tracking Season 3 immediately. Yellowjackets was a runaway hit in Season 1 and there was a pent-up expectation for Season 2. The show’s ambition is only surpassed by its execution, and for making this such a success I appreciate the fantastic creative team behind it, which includes Ashley [Lyle], Bart [Nickerson], Jonathan [Lisco], eOne, and the Showtime crew.
Season 3’s pre-production was supposed to start in May. Unfortunately, the Writers Guild of America strike that began on May 2, ’23 prevented it from beginning. Co-creator Ashley Lyle sent an update to the audience informing them that all writing for the future season has been suspended in support of the strike. According to the sources, the strike is expected to last for at least a few months.
Lyle penned, “Well, we had exactly one day in the #YellowJackets S3 writers’ room. It was amazing, and creatively invigorating, and so much fun, and I’m very excited to get back to it as soon as the #WGA gets a fair deal. #1u #unionstrong”
