Actor and filmmaker Konkona Sen Sharma recently opened up about facing casual sexism in the film industry. She spoke about how such behaviour often goes unnoticed because it appears as humour or comes from people close to us. But according to her, these situations still need to be addressed. She believes it is important to point out what is wrong, even if it is said as a joke.
Sharing her personal experience, Konkona said that she has seen such behaviour, though her own journey has been smoother than many others. She feels this is because she was already known as an actor and came from a film background, which gave her some ease while stepping into direction. However, she said that does not mean the problem does not exist.
Konkona also talked about how tough it can be to work in a space where such behaviour still exists. She said that people often have to build a thick skin to survive in this environment. Even though no one should have to deal with such issues, sometimes it becomes necessary to stay strong and keep working. She believes it is very important to speak out, especially in our own friend groups, and also to support others who might be facing similar problems.
Konkona was last seen in Metro In Dino, released on 4 July. Directed by Anurag Basu and produced by T-Series, the film explores modern-day relationships and features a large ensemble cast. Her words serve as a reminder that everyday sexism needs attention, no matter how small it may seem.
