The Garisenda Tower in Italy may fall because of excessive leaning and Bologna authorities are prepared for the possibility. For over 1,000 years, the Garisenda Tower, often known as the “leaning tower,” has stood steady. However, according to media sources, the tallest tower is now in danger of collapsing because of excessive leaning.
The iconic tower measures more than 150 feet tall and was built in the 12th century. It is situated next to the Asinelli Tower. Both are popular tourist spots in the city.
The city council agreed to install a protective metal cordon to “contain debris resulting from a possible collapse, to reduce the vulnerability of surrounding buildings and the exposure to the population, as well as blocking access to the off-limits area”.
Sensor readings that measure the movements of the historic towers got alerts in October 2023. As a result, authorities had ordered the urgent shutdown of the area surrounding the tower.
Every 15 minutes, readings are sent by monitoring devices positioned all around the tower. This keeps the authorities informed about the latest developments.
