James Milner joins Brighton on free after leaving Liverpool

Following a successful eight-year spell at Liverpool, midfielder James Milner will sign for Brighton & Hove Albion as a free agent next month, the two Premier League teams confirmed on Wednesday.

After a trophy-laden career with Liverpool, where he lifted the Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup in 332 appearances for the club, Brighton announced that the 37-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the south coast side.

After finishing 6th to qualify for the Europa League, Brighton will be playing in Europe for the 1st time and the club’s technical director David Weir said that Milner’s experience on a major stage would be helpful.

“We are delighted that James has agreed to join us after a hugely successful period at Liverpool. His experience speaks for itself with the amount of games he has played and the trophies he has won throughout a decorated career,” Weir said.

He added, “These games include European competition, which will be of huge value to us as we embark on our first season in Europe.”

After making his debut for the club with Leeds United in 2002 at the age of 16, Milner has become one of the finest players in England’s premier league.

He ranks third all-time in Premier League appearances with 619, behind Ryan Giggs (632) and Gareth Barry (652).
